Step One- Select a Machine

Selecting the right machine is your first step toward success. We recommend the Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System because it is the only machine that allows you to match factory specification on the shears you are sharpening.

The patented design on this machine allows the operator to center the radius, set the precise cutting angle and set stops for the hilt and tip of the blade to be sharpened.

The precision of these settings allows the blade to be returned to its factory new cutting condition. A grinder style machine destroys the convex edge. A flat hone design straightens the 800 millimeter radius. Either type sharpener will damage the blade and reduce its effectiveness when the stylist tries to cut.

"Choose a machine that will not damage the scissors blade in the sharpening process!"

Step Two- Select a Training Program

Selecting the right training is the second step toward your success in the scissors sharpening and sales business.

Having the right tools is one thing, knowing how to use them is equally important. The Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System comes with a two part training program:

Study Materials - Prior to comeing to class you will receive our illustrated training manual and training videos.

The illustrated manual covers our twenty step sharpening process in detail. It also includes industry terminology, illustrated descriptions of all the components generally found in a wide variety of scissors types and brands, together with a thorough discussion of steel quality and manufacturing techniques.

The section on scissors design and cutting techniques is extremely valuable when selling shears in the field. Most professional hair stylists have not been taught what style of shear to use for the various cutting techniques required for specific haircutting circumstances. You will be recognized and appreciated as the resident "expert" on hair styling shears after completing our training programs.

Training Video - Our training videos cover step by step instruction for sharpening hair styling shears and texturizing shears in both right and left handed versions. Viewing the entire process will enhance your learning process before, during and serve as a reference after your hands-on class room training.

Class Room Training - Each Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening Machine comes complete with classroom training. You will work one on one with your instructor to physically go through our entire twenty step sharpening process. Because it is generally one of the first questions people ase, we like to joke about how long it take to sharpen a pair of professional hair cutting scissors. "Well, your first pair will take about three hours." Of course be the end of your training class you will be doing the typical pair of scissor in less than thirty minutes. While sharpening that first pair of scissors it is crucial that you learn and understand the importance of each step in the sharpening process. Your instructor will guide you through the entire training process taking time to ensure that you can sharpen without concern of damaging your customers shear.

The Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System

The service side of our business has an exciting history. Sharpening shears is a critical service needed by all professional hair stylists. A good quality hair styling shear is able to do approximately 700 hair cuts before it needs to be sharpened. In actual usage that number can be significantly less.

There are a number of issues and circumstances that will cause the shears to need servicing sooner. Among the things that will cause your scissor to get dull faster are:

  1. Coarse hair
  2. Dirty hair
  3. Chemically treated hair such as color, perms
  4. Pool chlorine

Other factors are poor care:

  1. Dropping your shears
  2. Not cleaning them routinely
  3. Using them when they have been nicked from dropping
  4. Tossing them in a drawer to be banged around with other scissors, clips, curling irons and etc.

Matching the Convex edge and the 800 Millimeter Radius

The two most important components on the Japanese style hair cutting shear, which is the choice of approximately 80% of professional hair stylists, is the convex edge and the 800 millimeter radius.

First the convex edge:

Convex edgeThe convex edge is designed in conjunction with the hollow ground inside of the blade to create a cleaner sharper cut and to aid in slide cutting. Slide cutting is a cutting technique used by the hair stylist to give a feathered - textured, or more natural look to the finished hair cut.

If you sharpen with a grinder, you will destroy the convex edge creating instead a concave - bevel edge. Now when the stylist tries to slide cut, the scissors will tear and pull the hair.  It was this issue that the invention of the flat hone machines addressed.

The 800 Millimeter radius:

800 millimeter radiusWhat the flat hone and the grinder both fail to address is the 800 millimeter radius.

The 800 millimeter radius is a slight curve from the hilt to the tip of the blade. This curve adjusts the angle of attack as the blades close, causing them to in essence hold the hair in place. If the radius is straighten, the scissors will "push" the hair instead of cutting it cleanly. Now the stylist is "chasing" the hair all day long adding fatigue and time to each cut.

The Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System helps the stylist in the area of fatigue and time management. It helps the stylist's customer by not causing split ends. If you cut hair with dull scissors, you are breaking the hair rather than making a clean cut.

When the professional hair stylist understands the technology of our system, they really have no other choice. The Diamond Rose system will restore the scissors to factory new cutting condition. Other sharpening systems, no matter how skilled the operator, will damage the cutting edge and or the 800 millimeter radius.
