The Diamond Rose Shears Comprehensive Training Program

Our unique selling proposition (USP) “The Precision of a Diamond Cutter... the Gentleness of Rose Petal” provides the foundation of the Diamond Rose Shears Training Program.

It all starts with a precision system.

Our patented sharpening machine, combined with our proven 20 step sharpening process, gives us a system that produces the same exceptional results time-after-time.

Without the machine, the system won’t work; without the process, the machine is far less effective. But in combination, you will consistently be able to return scissors to a factory-new cutting condition!

No other sharpening system provides the precision needed to restore damaged shears or for that matter, even sharpen them correctly. In many cases, these other machines will actually damage the shears simply because of their design. For example, if you try to do a convex edge on a grinder, you’ll destroy that edge as soon as you touch the blade against the grinding wheel. A flat hone machine, which may hold the convex edge, straightens the 800 millimeter radius or at best, leaves it up to the hand-eye coordination of the operator to try and maintain that critical radius. With the Diamond Rose Shears Superior Sharpening System, scissors are sharpened perfectly, automatically and every time.

You’ll be the local authority.

By the end of your week of training, besides being an expert sharpener, you will know:

• What different scissors designs mean to the stylist.
• How scissors are manufactured.
• What the different grades of steel are and what that affects quality.
• How to diagnose the problems with any pair of scissors placed in your hand.

You will be able to answer pretty much any question a stylist, or anyone else may ask.

You’ll be an educator.

The Diamond Rose Shears Superior Sharpening System Training Program is all about education, not "selling." Your first job in the salon is to explain why the stylists don't have to worry about scissors being ruined again.

This will be your biggest hurdle the first time in a salon. All stylists have had scissors ruined by some “migrant sharpener” who visits once and then moves on to another area as they try to find someone willing to let them sharpen their shears.

Others will tell you they have a sharpener who does a “wonderful job” on their shears. But to what are they comparing that experience? To the guy who completely ruined a pair of scissors? Even the stylists who believe they have a competent sharpener will admit the shears don't cut like they did when they were brand new.

You won’t have to get into the physics of how scissors work or even a detailed discussion of steel quality (although you could.) Simply explain the two main components of a Japanese-Style shear and how you can maintain both and they will let you sharpen at least one pair. Once you’ve proven that you can do what you say, they will be your customers for life.

Becoming a master sharpener.

Starting with our patented sharpening machine, you will learn how to return hair cutting shears to factory-new specifications. We train you in both convex and bevel edge sharpening techniques. In addition the machine converts easily to handle left-handed shears.

The machine itself is very user friendly so if you have normal motor skills, you will not have a problem becoming a master sharpener. Fully-loaded with abrasive disks and supplies, the machine weighs approximately 30 pounds. It is not difficult to move in and out of the salon. As you can see in our "Set Up" video, it is easy for either men or women to use.

During your week of training, you will learn our proven, 20 step process for returning the shears to their original factory specifications. In a morbid kind of way, our instructor enjoys taking a twelve inch file to a pair of practice shears, filing and banging on the edges until the scissors will not even close and then saying, “Here, fix these.” The beauty of our system is that not only can you make them cut, they will actually cut like new to the point, where when compared to a new pair right out of the box, you cannot distinguish the difference.

Many people ask, “How long does it take to sharpen a pair of shears?” Your first pair will take about three hours. By the time the week of training is over, you will have it down to about 25 minutes. After a couple of weeks in the field, it will take 18 or 20 minutes to do a quality job sharpening the normal shear. Be sure to explain to the stylist your 20 step process takes time. They are accustomed to the grinder doing it in five minutes or less. The reality is it does not take long to ruin a pair of shears. But, it does take time to do them correctly.

Becoming an effective sales professional.

As a Diamond Rose Distributor, you are a business owner. Did you realize that one of the primary jobs of a business owner is selling? In your business, your customers are all out “there” in the salons waiting for you to come and solve their problem. This is very easy if you simply follow our 7 step proven method.

  1. Personal Presentation: You will adopt our corporate image. Wear slacks and one of your Diamond Rose Logo Shirts. Arrive at the salon with your sample case and a supply of roses. Introduce yourself using the rose as your gift for their time. Give roses to the stylists, the receptionist, and the customers.
  2. Education: You will learn how to present our system by explaining the importance of the convex edge and the 800 millimeter radius. Your description of how the older systems work will help the stylist understand why they have had so much difficulty getting shears sharpened correctly. It’s not that their former sharpener was a bad person; instead, it was the inadequate and outdated equipment that kept the sharpener from returning scissors to factory-new cutting conditions.
  3. Value: You’ll be able to explain what determines the price, cost and value of a quality shear.
  4. Shear brands: You will be able to recognize the different brands and talk about the issues stylists have using them.
  5. Shear styles and their uses. You’ll be an expert in the many different models, styles and lengths of shears available. By talking to the stylist, you’ll be able to recommend the best shear style and length for their preferred cutting technique.
  6. Product Presentation: You’ll know how to present your Musashi Shears. Available in more than 120 different sizes and models, your goal is to meet any need the stylist has for a cutting shear. The great selection of both right and left-handed shears allows you to meet the needs of the most discriminating stylist.
  7. Saying Good Bye: Every salon represents a significant, long-term income stream for you. The life time value of a single stylist can easily run $500 or more per year. It’s up to you to make sure they are looking forward to your next visit. Schedule your return for 90 days out and leave your business cards behind so they can contact you if there is a problem.

Sales management and customer service.

Remember, you work for yourself. You are both your sales manager, and your customer service department.

Customer Service and Territory Development are your responsibility. A 300 to 500 salon territory is a significant business. You’ll need to establish a schedule and plan your route to hit as many salons as you can each day. Track your performance and record your results.

Here are a few of the basics you need to know:

After you’ve been through your territory, you should have a good idea of how to hit each salon every 90 days. Styling shears should be sharpened at least every 90 days. Cutting with dull scissors breaks the hair, causing split ends. Doing this to a client, risks the stylist losing that customer because their hair style degenerates into the frizzies in a day or two. In addition to their risk of losing a customer, they’ll be adding to their own fatigue by the end of the day cutting with dull scissors.

Following the Diamond Rose System, you will build confidence in the stylists each time you go through your protected territory. As the weeks and months go by, you will do more and more business because the stylist will learn to trust you. Your knowledge and professionalism in both your appearance and conduct will help you develop a truly great business.

True Story:

Two stylists were relaxing and having a beverage after hours. The topic of scissors sharpening came up and a friendly argument ensued. Each claimed to have found the "best" sharpener. As the "discussion" continued it finally came out they had both discovered a Diamond Rose Distributor in adjoining territories.
